How Is a Pap Smear Performed?
A Pap smear is quick and will be performed as part of your yearly well-woman exam at our office near Norcross, GA. You will be positioned on an exam table with your feet placed in stirrups before a speculum is inserted into your vagina to obtain a tissue sample from your cervix. You may feel a brief pinch as Dr. Sotomayor uses a specialized brush and a scraping device to collect the sample of cells. The tissue sample will be sent to the lab for testing. Following your Pap smear, you will be free to get back to your usual activities. You might have some slight cramping or mild bleeding, but this shouldn't last for more than a couple of days. In the event of an abnormal Pap test, our office will notify you as soon as possible. We will let you know the next steps regarding follow-up testing and treatment for abnormal Pap smears.
