What is Liposuction?

No matter how much you watch what you eat and exercise, you may still have excess body fat that affects your ability to feel confident. At Gynecology and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Atlanta, Dr. Gerry Sotomayor offers the latest methods to safely rid fat from areas of concern on the body. Liposuction (also called lipo) is a body contouring surgery that reduces fat from certain body areas, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks, to produce a more defined appearance. When we see you for your consultation near Norcross, GA, we will examine your areas of concern and create a personalized plan to help you reach your cosmetic surgery goals. Our hope is that you feel and look your absolute best.

What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that can be used to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat, especially those that have continued to remain even after other forms of treatment. It has proven to be especially beneficial for patients who are already near their target weight and would simply like to enhance the overall shape of their bodies. After the procedure, many of our patients feel much more confident in their appearance, which can improve the overall quality of their daily lives.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is not a replacement for weight loss. Instead, it can be used to target specific areas of the body where diet and exercise have not produced slimming results. Patients considering liposuction should be at or near their ideal body weight and have healthy skin elasticity. Dr. Sotomayor will perform an exam during a consultation to determine whether you are a good candidate for liposuction. Our goal is always to help patients reach their cosmetic surgery goals safely and effectively.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction can be ideal for individuals who are at a healthy weight but want to reduce troublesome areas of fat. During your initial consultation, Dr. Sotomayor will learn about your goals and set realistic expectations. Liposuction is an outpatient procedure performed using local anesthesia and IV sedation. A small incision is made in the skin using a microcannula. The microcannula is a very thin needle that helps work loose the fatty tissue as it is being vacuumed out. After the desired amount of fatty tissue has been suctioned out, Dr. Sotomayor will close the small incision. Based on the number of sections treated, your surgery may last an hour or longer. Following liposuction, you will need to recover at home for about a week before you're able to return to work. It can take 4 – 6 weeks before you can exercise or engage in other physical activities. You may see some changes soon after your surgery, but it will take around 6 – 10 months before your new body contour is complete.

How Long Is Recovery After Liposuction?

You may need to recover at home from lipo for 1 – 3 weeks based on the number of sections treated and the amount of fat removed. It is typical to have swelling and bruising for 1 – 2 weeks, and you should have sutures taken out on day seven to day 10. What is most important after having lipo surgery is to allow your body time to heal and recover. When you decide to go back to work after your procedure, you should do your best to minimize stress and strenuous activity. To build up your strength, try light workouts and go for walks, as advised by Dr. Sotomayor. Keep in mind you may notice some improvements after six weeks, but it takes around 6 – 10 months until your new body contour and shape are attained.

Liposuction FAQ

How much does liposuction cost?
Your cost for liposuction will vary based on the technique being used and the number of areas being addressed. During your consultation, Dr. Sotomayor will develop your unique liposuction surgical plan based on your needs and goals. He will also consider your budget. Once your plan is ready, estimated costs will be discussed. To help make your surgery easy to afford, Gynecology and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Atlanta accepts many payment options, and we will help you find low-interest financing.

What about nonsurgical liposuction?
There are many nonsurgical options to reduce body fat. Some of the most popular brands are CoolSculpting®, UltraShape, Vanquish, Liposonix, and KYBELLA®. Although these nonsurgical procedures may help reduce small amounts of fat, surgical liposuction is still best for most people. Liposuction surgery delivers more dramatic and consistent results. Ask Dr. Sotomayor about nonsurgical liposuction during your consultation. He can explain the benefits and drawbacks of both methods and help you choose which is best for your needs and goals.

What about cellulite and loose skin?
Surgical liposuction only addresses excess fat. If you have loose skin, Dr. Sotomayor may suggest combining liposuction with a surgical body lift. Liposuction is often performed along with skin tightening surgery, like a tummy tuck, thighplasty, or arm lift, to produce the best results. To correct cellulite, there are many nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatments, including Cellulaze, VelaShape®, VASER® Shape, and Venus Freeze™. In your consultation, tell Dr. Sotomayor about your concerns, like cellulite and loose skin – so a comprehensive treatment plan is created.

Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is a surgical procedure, incisions will be made and sutured. These will leave scars, but Dr. Sotomayor does his best to reduce their appearance. This starts with making thin incisions in less visible areas or the natural folds of your body. After your surgery, Dr. Sotomayor or a member of his team will go over how to care for your incisions — so they heal flat and fade.

Will my results last?
Before liposuction, it is important to be committed to maintaining your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in an area, you can still gain and lose weight. Dr. Sotomayor recommends that you be at or near a healthy weight before having liposuction. Afterward, it is best to stay within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will also alter your results; however, another surgery or mommy makeover can be done to refresh your body.
